I’ve been interested in exercise and fitness for the better part of 25 years. I played sports. Did martial arts (pssst…don’t tell anybody…I even did tap and salsa dancing). Got my first bench and weight set when I was 13 (I could incline press an entire 15 pounds). Later on, I still loved going to the gym and “hitting the weights” to get huge…or so I thought…

Unfortunately, my life up to a point had been filled with TV, bodybuilding magazines, and misinformed sports coaches. So by the time I realized the mistakes in my fitness routine, I was already fat, lost my breath easily, and had chronic back pain.

All of that crazy stuff out there, the fad diets, dvd programs, “best selling books,” I tried em’ all.

Here’s a review of my experiences as a human guinea pig:

 

  • I went to the gym almost every day. I agonizing through grunting, yelling, and even made horse, cow, and other farm animal sounds as I pushed and pulled my way through typical bodybuilding exercises. But that was just it, I was doing things recommended by “experts” with above average genetics or that used performance enhancing drugs. So all I would end up with was injury.
  • Fad diets – Atkins, Zone, South Beach, grapefruit, cabbage, “Squats & Milk”…Unsuspecting people keep falling for 1000’s of them and somehow they keep multiplying. Think about it…if any of these diets really worked, why would someone need to create another one?

Some require the complete elimination of a food group, some resort to having you practically carry a chemistry lab with you wherever you go, and some are just plain dangerous and unhealthy. All I got from these was an empty stomach and feeling like I didn’t have a life anymore. Plus, even after all that sacrifice, giving myself a break meant gaining all the weight back and more.

  • Books and dvd’s – These worked okay for a little while but they also had major disadvantages and were far from complete. No one was there to correct my exercise form and the dvd’s and books don’t thoroughly explain everything. As a consequence, I would just keep doing what I thought was right until something happened. Unfortunately, that something was an injury and by then it was already too late.

The sad truth about being injured – you can’t exercise. And personally, I’m the kind of person that needs exercise or else I can’t stick to the rest of a program. So again, I would end up worse than before. When I could finish the “4 weeks” outlined…then what – do the same thing again? This would quickly become old and results would eventually fade.

  • Pills – These are the biggest rip-offs ever. The only results I got from these were anxiousness and empty pockets.
